December and January are generally the best months to visit Magdalena Island's Magellanic penguin colony when it is most active. December to February is a good window for combining Magdalena Island and the King Penguin Nature Reserve. The right choice depends on the species, your travel dates and how much time you have: this guide helps you decide.
First: Magdalena Island and the king penguins are different experiences
Magdalena Island, part of Los Pingüinos Natural Monument, is home to Magellanic penguins. The excursion involves a boat trip from Punta Arenas and a walk along the island's trail. Check the Magdalena Island catamaran tour for the itinerary and availability for your dates.
The King Penguin Nature Reserve is in Bahía Inútil, Tierra del Fuego. It offers guided, controlled observation of a different species. The excursion from Punta Arenas takes a full day, combining road travel and sea crossings. Check the Tierra del Fuego King Penguin day tour for the itinerary.

Magdalena Island season: use October to March for planning
To plan your visit to Magdalena Island, use the regular season from October 1 to March 31. Visits may extend into mid-April, but departures that month need to be confirmed in advance.
If you are traveling in April, ask us about availability before planning the rest of your itinerary.
The usual season is not a confirmed departure. The protected area must be open, the operator must have a scheduled trip and sea conditions must allow the visit. Check availability before booking, particularly at the start and end of the season.

How the colony changes during the season
Magellanic penguins begin returning to their breeding colonies in September. October and November usually feature courtship, nest preparation and incubation. December and January offer good chances of seeing developing chicks, although their presence is not guaranteed on a particular date.
February may bring more developed juveniles. During March, the colony moves towards the end of its annual cycle, so the experience changes compared with early summer.

King penguin season: visits from October to May
The king penguin visiting season runs from October to May, subject to weather conditions. Observation inside the reserve lasts approximately one hour; the complete trip from Punta Arenas takes much longer.
This species has a breeding cycle that can extend beyond a year, unlike that of Magellanic penguins. To plan your visit, consider the reserve's opening season and the time needed to travel through Tierra del Fuego.
Magdalena Island or King Penguin Park if you have limited time?
If you only have a morning or an afternoon, Magdalena is usually a better fit because of its boat-trip format and island visit. Check the duration, departure time and meeting point on the catamaran tour page before planning the rest of your day.
If you specifically want to see king penguins, set aside a full day for Tierra del Fuego. The appeal includes both the species and the journey; you should be comfortable with many hours of road travel and sea crossings for approximately one hour of observation at the reserve.
If you have two days between December and February, consider both tours. They are different experiences, with different species, landscapes and ways of visiting the colonies.
Compare the Magdalena Island catamaran excursion with the King Penguin day tour and choose according to your dates and available time.

Weather and cancellations: leave room in your itinerary
Boat trips to Magdalena depend on wind, sea conditions and weather. King Penguin Park is not a guaranteed alternative in bad weather: the reserve may suspend visits and the route involves sea crossings.
We do not recommend having a flight on the same day as the King Penguin tour. Sea conditions can sometimes prevent the return crossing from Tierra del Fuego and delay your arrival in Punta Arenas. Leave time between this excursion and your flight.
If you are spending only a few days in Punta Arenas, try to book your penguin excursion for the first day that fits your itinerary and allow time to reschedule, subject to availability. Review the service's change and cancellation conditions before paying.

The walk and what to consider when traveling with children
Magdalena Island's trail is easy, with a length of 1.4 km and approximately one hour for the visit. There is still a boat landing and outdoor ground exposed to the weather. An easy walk does not imply universal accessibility.
For the king penguins, the main consideration is the total length of the day rather than hiking. If you are traveling with children, older adults or someone with mobility needs, ask about boarding, transport and visiting conditions before booking.

What to bring and how to photograph the penguins
- Layers, a windproof and waterproof jacket, a hat, gloves and suitable walking shoes.
- Protection for your camera or phone against moisture and wind, and charged batteries.
- On Magdalena, a zoom helps photograph birds without approaching them. Include the landscape in some shots too.
- For the king penguins, a telephoto lens can be useful because viewing takes place at a distance; there is no mandatory focal length.
On Magdalena, keep a minimum distance of 2 meters, stay on the trail and let penguins pass. Do not use flash, feed wildlife or approach nests or burrows. Drones are prohibited. Always follow your guide's instructions.
