Itinerary

The Winter Camp Patagonia 2025 will take place in the Magallanes National Reserve, Punta Arenas. On the first day, participants will receive a welcome, learn how to set up a snow camp, attend a workshop on clothing and equipment with emphasis on the prevention of hypothermia and frostbite, and finish the day with a winter hike using snowshoes. The second day will be dedicated to a ski touring workshop and avalanche rescue practice with the use of ARVA, shovel, and probe, concluding with the closing and dismantling of the camp.

📅 Day 1

09:00 AM – Welcome and briefing at the Administration of Magallanes National Reserve.
09:30 AM approx. – Start of the hike towards Base Camp.

MODULE I: Manage and prepare your winter excursion (Camp Dome)

Winter camping techniques.

Clothing and equipment for winter trekking.

Leave No Trace principles.

MODULE II: Ski Touring talk and avalanche hazards (Camp Area)

Introduction to DVA/ARVA, shovel, and probe.

Introductory talk on Ski Touring.

MODULE III: Prevention and treatment of hypothermia and frostbite (Camp Dome)

Physiological effects of cold, hypothermia, and frostbite.

08:00 PM – Dinner.

MODULE IV: Basic techniques and tools for winter trekking (During circuit)

Field practice: winter hiking circuit.

Techniques for progression on snowy terrain.

Techniques for progression on snowy terrain with snowshoes and Ski Touring.

Basic orientation: use of compass and map.

03:00 PM – Camp dismantling.

Day 1
Welcome and snow camp set-up, workshop on clothing and equipment with focus on hypothermia and frostbite prevention, and a winter hike with snowshoes.

Day 2


Ski touring workshop, avalanche rescue practice with ARVA, shovel and probe, followed by camp dismantling and closing of the activity.

Proper clothing: bring technical winter gear (thermal layers, waterproof jacket, snow pants, gloves, hat, and scarf).

Footwear: use waterproof and comfortable hiking boots with good grip.

Useful accessories: headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.

Physical condition: a basic fitness level is recommended for walking on snowy terrain.

Personal gear: each participant should bring personal hygiene items, snacks, and light meals.

Respect nature: always follow the guides’ instructions and apply the Leave No Trace principles.

Safety first: weather in the mountains can change quickly, so it is essential to listen to and follow instructions at all times.
